NYCHA First Houses Roofing Replacement and Exterior Restoration, 29-41 Avenue A and 114-138 East 3rd Street, New York, NY

First Houses is a public housing project in Alphabet City, Manhattan, New York City, first public housing project in the United States, designated a New York City and National Historic Landmark in 1974. The project consists of eight four-story and five-story buildings, and is located on the south side of East 3rd Street between First Avenue and Avenue A, and on the west side of Avenue A between East 2nd and 3rd Streets in Alphabet City and East Village.

Planning

Project is for restorative work throughout all of the facades of buildings within the complex, including rebuilding brick parapets in kind, re-pointing masonry and replacing brickwork, precast coping stones and metal lintels. Entrance porticos will be temporarily removed to allow for replacement or restoration of green painted cast iron columns and railings. Work on porticos includes replacement of portico copper roofs, copper cornices, new concrete entrance stairs and landings, footings and replacement of nearby concrete or asphalt pavers pathways.

Roofs of all buildings will be replaced with new liquid applied roofing membrane over new insulation. New grey painted galvanized handrails will be installed on the inboard side of selected parapet walls.
